Since Belgium joined the euro area, the National Bank has initiated a number of measures to promote research and cooperation with the academic world.

These include the joint research projects organised in connection with the biennial international scientific conferences held by the National Bank, specialist macroeconomic seminars, the development of temporary scientific collaboration programs and the launch of the International Journal of Central Banking. These various activities are intended to foster better understanding of the mechanisms at work in the economy and to promote genuine dynamism in the work done by the National Bank’s research teams.

The research activities conducted jointly with the Eurosystem and the ECB also offer the opportunity to cooperate with the academic world.

 
Eurosystem/ESCB Networks
Economists from the Bank are involved in the analysis and research work carried out in the "networks" that the Eurosystem (euro area)  or the European System of Central Banks (EU) sets up with a view to deepening its understanding of certain economic mechanisms. These networks bring together researchers from the ECB, the national central banks of the European Union, the academic world and from statistical institutes.
Macroeconomic seminar organised jointly with 3 universities
With the aim of stimulating macroeconomic and monetary debate and research, the National Bank, in collaboration with the KUL (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven), UCL (Catholic University of Louvain) and ULB (Free University of Brussels), organises regular seminars at which internationally renowned experts in the academic or monetary policy spheres are invited to speak.
Joint research project and international biennial conference
The National Bank organizes every two years an international conference, to which research projects are connected appealing to various research teams from the academic world and the NBB research department. The objective of these conferences is to present the results from the research projects and to contribute to their diffusion beyond our borders.

International Journal of Central Banking
The IJCB is a new quarterly publication on central bank theory and practice, with a special emphasis on research relating to monetary and financial stability.
Conference on International Macroeconomics and Finance
On 13 and 14 February 2009, the NBB organised a CEPR Conference, in collaboration with ECARES, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven,  World Economy and Finance Research Programme.
Euro Area Business Cycle Network (EABCN)
The Euro Area Business Cycle Network provides a forum for the better understanding of the Euro area business cycle, linking academic researchers and researchers in central banks and other policy institutions involved in the empirical analysis of the Euro area business cycle.
